a playful trailer for the incredible trio of heroines
A first trailer for Wonders was exclusively shown at the D23 expo and heralds a more comical film than Captain Marvel.
After the first appearance of Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson) in Captain Marvelin 2019, then the introduction of Kamala Khan (played by Iman Vellani) in Miss Wonderthe heroines will soon be reunited in the cinema. With all the convolutions between Marvel films and series, it took twists and turns to finally arrive at Wonders.
The sequel to the adventures of the galactic superheroine therefore joins the plot of Miss Wonderas well as that of Teyonah Parris’ character, Monica Rambeau (having received powers during the events of Wanda Vision) to form a makeshift coalition. The three women should hardly have the choice to unite in view of the circumstances revealed by the very first trailer for the film.
Captain Marvel, too strong for her own good
The trailer broadcast at the D23, unavailable on the Internet for the moment, would open on the discovery, by Monica Rambeau, of a space breach. By touching her, trouble begins, and she immediately switches places with Kamala Khan. A strange phenomenon that is reminiscent of that of the last post-credits scene of Miss Marvel where the young heroine exchanged her place with that of Carol Danvers,
During a meeting between Monica and Kamala, the latter is again replaced by Captain Marvel while she tries to use her powers, thus reuniting Monica and Carol after a long separation. After the introductions and awkward situations are over, the trailer would show the three heroines working together to fight off an army of soldiers, presumably Kree. Then playing with untimely teleportations and involuntary exchanges of places between the protagonists, the first images of the film give it a more comical and funny aspect than anything else.
Monica Rambeau in WandaVision
On paper, the idea of limiting the powers of the three women (especially Captain Marvel’s) while forcing them to work together to get by is pretty clever. One of the big challenges of writing for such powerful characters (who can run amok on a galactic scale) is finding a way to curb their power and create a stake that is not merely artificial.
So well exploited (and not just used for comic purposes), this game about the co-dependency of heroines and their constant teleportations could be both a clever narrative spring and an opportunity for original staging effects. To see what it will give, even if for the moment, the trailer has revealed nothing other than wacky situations (which Marvel really did not miss) and misunderstandings in bulk. The Marvels should be released on July 26, 2023 in French theaters.
