a title and a story for the Disney prequel to Mufasa

The prequel to Lion King from Disney, version 2019, found a title, a story and a release date.

It’s no longer a secret that Disney has established itself over the years as the absolute king of the box office. Lately, with his (insignificant) remake of the Lion Kingthe studio has raised no less than $1.6 billion worldwide. It’s simply highest-grossing Disney animated film in the United States and worldwide.

After such a robbery, it’s hard for the greedy studio to resist the temptation to expand a little further the universe populated by big digital cats and fake sunsets. This is how Disney recently launched a prequel project to the 2019 film, directed by Barry Jenkins and with the voice of Aaron Pierre in the role of Mufasa. While the feature film is still in preparation, Disney unveiled during its biannual convention, the D23, the title of the film, Mufasa: The Lion King.

The king’s return

The big-eared studio also revealed that the feature film will take place on two different timelines. Indeed, on the one hand Timon, Pumba and Rafik will tell the story of Mufasa to a toddler, and on the other, we will discover with our own eyes the rise to power of Simba’s fatherbefore the events of the film 1994 2019.

Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen will be back for this new Disney seriesrespectively to reprise their roles as Timon and Pumba. Alongside them, Kelvin Harrison will lend his voice to young Scar, succeeding Chiwetel Ejiofor, who played the character in the previous Lion King. As a reminder, Jeff Nathanson will be in charge of the script for this prequel, after having written that of 2019, but also that ofStop me if you can and D’Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The Lion KingThe storytellers of this new story

Another little surprise of this D23, it was announced that Mufasa: The Lion King would go out in cinemas worldwide in 2024. To see if this new Disney creation will be more convincing than the empty good Lion King of 2019. In the absence of a great film, the script and the staging of this new feature film will not be taken from a pre-existing work. So let’s keep the hope of having a film that is a little bit original, and not entirely copied from an elder.
