Amy Winehouse’s father defends Marisa Abela’s choice to play his daughter

Faced with the rumble of the fans, the father ofAmy Winehouse stepped up. While filming the biopic Back to black began in London on January 16, the first images of Marisa Abela in the skin of the interpreter of rehab have surfaced and fans are blaming the lack of resemblance.

To pay Mitch Winehousewho is also the administrator of his daughter’s estate, these reproaches have no reason to be. “Marisa is an excellent choice for the role, even if she doesn’t look exactly like Amy,” he told TMZ.

He also pointed out that Eddie Marsan, who plays him in the biopic, doesn’t look much like him, but looks aren’t what a successful biopic is all about.

A heavy project

The star’s father insisted people put “too much emphasis on looks” and it’s not the first time actors have played real-life characters who they don’t exactly look like.

As for the film crew, the director Sam Taylor Johnson is in any case filled by the project. She explains that she is “fully aware of the responsibility” which rests on her shoulders and those of screenwriter Matt Greenhalgh. “I will create a film that we will all love and cherish forever. Just like we do with Amy,” she promised in a statement.

The cast is completed by Jack O’Connell, chosen to play Blake Fielder-Civil, the singer’s toxic ex-companion. Lesley Manville, meanwhile, will be Cynthia, Amy Winehouse’s grandmother.
