Bachman-Turner Overdrive drummer dies at 69

The drummer of the Canadian rock band Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO), Robbie Bachman, died Thursday at the age of 69.

It was his brother and fellow band member, Randy, who made the announcement in the evening on Twitter.

“Another sad departure,” he wrote. “The drumbeat behind BTO, my little brother Robbie joined mum, dad and brother Gary on the other side. Maybe Jeff Beck needs a drummer! He was a vital cog in our rock ‘n’ roll machine and we rocked the world together.”

Randy and Robbie had started music when they were children in Winnipeg, Manitoba, before the guitarist asked his brother to join his band Brave Belt, formed with Chad Allan.

After recording albums in the 1970s, Tim Bachman and Fred Turner joined the then renamed Bachman-Turner Overdrive band.

The rock band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2014.
