Chinese New Year shooting in California: Body found in van surrounded by law enforcement

UPDATE 10:45 p.m. American televisions were on a loop this Sunday as the suspect was surrounded by police in a parking lot. A body was found in the seat of the van.

Surrounded by police in a parking lot, the hunt for the main suspect in the attack that killed ten people in a dance hall in Monterey Park, California, seemed to be coming to an end. At the end of the day on Saturday, during the Lunar New Year celebrations, he opened fire before fleeing.

This Sunday, American television broadcast the suspect’s arrest operations live. The SWAT intervention teams ended up entering the vehicle where a body was found without it being known, this Sunday evening, if it was that of suspect N°1.

Earlier in the evening, the Los Angeles police had released the report of the suspect, a man of Asian origin whose motives were unknown.

On Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 10:22 p.m., the male/adult/Asian suspect pictured above was involved in a shooting. Investigators have identified him as a homicide suspect and he should be considered armed and dangerous.

On Saturday, ten more people were taken to local hospitals for treatment and at least one was in critical condition, Los Angeles County officials said Sunday morning, about five hours after the attack.

The shooting took place after 10 p.m. (0600 GMT Sunday) as the Lunar New Year was celebrated and many downtown streets closed for the festivities that draw thousands from across Southern California. Monterey Park is a town located some seven miles from downtown Los Angeles. About two-thirds of its residents are Asian, according to US census data.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office said it cannot determine at this time whether it was a racist attack. Images posted on social networks show the injured on stretchers being taken by the emergency services to ambulances. Near the scene of the shooting, the streets are blocked by the police, also show other videos. “Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones tonight in our nearby town of Monterey Park, where a mass shooting just occurred,” Los Angeles city official Kenneth Mejia wrote on Twitter.
