Davie delivers an icebreaker to the Coast Guard

Chantier Davie announced on October 17 that it has delivered to the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) the CCGS Vincent-Massey, a medium-sized icebreaker (MIB) converted for the CCG by a Lévis-based company.

It should be noted that in August 2018, the Government of Canada, on behalf of the Canadian Coast Guard, awarded the Davie Shipyard a contract worth $610 million to procure three icebreakers and carry out preparatory work for these vessels for service in the Canadian Coast Guard. Built in 2000, CCGS Vincent Massey is one of three vessels procured to be upgraded to a MIB-class icebreaker.

CCGS Vincent Massey is equipped with four medium-speed diesel engines, driving two variable-pitch propellers in the nozzles, with a total propulsion power of 13,440 kW (18,020 hp). It can reach a maximum speed of 16 knots (30 km/h) in open water and break through one meter of ice at a continuous speed of 3 knots (5.6 km/h). Its total length is 83.7 meters. The vessel has a maximum of 30 cabins to accommodate the officers and crew who will serve on board when the vessel is commissioned by the CCG.

Indeed, CCGS Vincent Massey will join two ships previously converted by Davie for the CCG, CCGS Captain Molly Kool and CCGS Jean Goodwill, which already provide icebreaking services in Canada.

In a press release, Chantier Davie expressed its pleasure to have delivered the CCGS Vincent Massey “on time and within the budget agreed with the Canadian Coast Guard.”

“As Davie prepares to enter the National Shipbuilding Strategy, the delivery of the CCGS Vincent Massey is another excellent example of the company’s ability to deliver the ships the Canadian government needs while delivering added value to the Canadian taxpayer,” concluded Lévis. the company, in a statement sent to the media to announce the delivery.
