Real name Artis Leon Ivey, “Coolio” began his solo music career in 1994 with the album It takes a thief which is a success, but the following year, it is a planetary hit that awaits the artist with the release of the single A gangster’s paradise. This is a cover of Leisure paradise by Stevie Wonder with new lyrics in duet with LV, which accompanies the release of the feature film Rebellious Spirits (Dangerous spirits) with Michelle Pfeiffer.

This feature film was released in 1996 on French screens, and tells the confrontation between a former Marine teacher facing a class of difficult students, from working class backgrounds and ethnic minorities. Produced by the Don Simpson / Jerry Bruckheimer duo, the film is a hit, like its soundtrack. Coolio’s second album is accordingly titled… gangster paradise.
