F1: Max Verstappen takes pole position in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — The Formula One champion secured the lead position heading into the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, ahead of fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Pérez.

Verstappen is looking for a 15th win this season which would improve his record.

Verstappen clocked 1:23.824, beating Perez by .228 seconds.

The Mexican wants to steal second place in the championship from Charles Leclerc of Ferrari.

Leclerc will start third.

Verstappen said he was scared at the start of the final session when everything went dark in his car in the garage, delaying his entry on the track.

“I’m very happy that it’s settled and also that we will be both on the front line,” said Verstappen. We want Checo (Pérez) to be able to finish second in the championship. »

“Max did a great job helping me out,” added Pérez. We really rode as a team at the end of the day. »

Leclerc mentioned having made a braking error in the last session.

Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz will start fourth, ahead of the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.

Four-time F1 champion Sebastian Vettel qualified ninth with Aston Martin for the final race of his career.

Daniel Ricciardo of McLaren, in search of a drive for 2023, will be the 10th on the starting grid.

Canadian Lance Stroll will start 14th with Aston Martin.
