Films, series and other TV films will have to estimate their CO2 emissions to continue to receive public aid from January 1, 2024, the National Center for Cinema and Animated Image announced on Wednesday October 5.
“As of March 31, 2023, producers of cinematographic works (feature and short films) and audiovisual works (series and unit), belonging to the genre of fiction and documentary, will have to provide a carbon footprint of the works at the time of their requests for help”announced the CNC in a press release. In particular, it will be necessary to calculate the CO2 emitted during filming (transport, canteen, technical means, etc.) and post-production.
And from January 1, 2024, the provision of this carbon footprint will condition the allocation of public aid, he added. This measure is part of a plan to help the cinema and audiovisual sector reduce its carbon emissions. The obligation will be extended in a second phase “to animated, immersive works and video games”.
The CNC began to condition its aid in 2021 in another area, gender-based and sexual violence, making obtaining its funds subject to training in the prevention of harassment.
