Billy Corgan, frontman of the Smashing Pumpkins, remarked that the overwhelming popularity of old music makes it much more difficult to get attention for new releases today than it was in the early 90s, when it had “only” people like Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) and Eddie Vedder (pearl jam) to compete.

Thanks to advancements in technology and the advent of streaming services, there is more music being released today than at any other time in history.

Still, most listeners seem to favor listening to old classics, as a report released earlier this year indicated that 73% of the total albums consumed by music lovers in the United States in 2021 are “early music”. .

Indeed, an analysis published by Music Business Worldwide revealed that early music, referred to as “catalog music”, accounted for 73.1% of total album consumption in the second half of 2021.

This rather surprising conclusion was drawn from the latest US market report published by MRC Data on January 6th.

However, there are a few important points to keep in mind, such as the fact that MRC treats this “catalog music” like any album older than 18 months. Additionally, the data does not distinguish between streaming and purchased albums in other formats, with the final figures representing the total of the two.

All of that aside, there are also plenty of nostalgic fans who would like certain artists to keep their sound forever, or go back to what they were doing in their glory days.

It is in this context that the Smashing Pumpkins are releasing (today) the first part of their multi-part rock opera, entitled ATUM. And on this occasion, the leader Billy Corgan gave an interview to the Guardian in which he talks about the aforementioned phenomenon.

He says in particular: “[Aujourd’hui] I’m no longer in competition with Kurt [Cobain] and Eddie [Vedder]. I’m competing with the biggest pop stars on the planet, who have 14 agents and 30 songwriters.”

However, this does not discourage him in the least, as he also asserts: “I’m not going to pretend: I consider ourselves to be one of the greatest bands around, and that’s based on the belief that we have something unique to offer. I already felt that when we played in front of 50 people in 1988, and I don’t even know why. It was just something that emanated from the band, and it stuck.”

The first part of the opera Rock of the Smashing Pumpkins, ATUM, is out today.
