During the fourth episode of Netflix’s documentary series, titled Harry & Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex opened up about how she went through a dark time as a working member of the Royal Family following her marriage to Prince Harry in May 2018.

Meghan Markle says she didn’t feel protected by other members of the British royal family and didn’t know how to get support.

“I wanted to be helped (by doctors), but I had no right. They were concerned about the image it would give to the institution…”, she declared in Harry & Meghan, the six-part documentary available on Netflix.

Furthermore, Prince Harry confessed that he didn’t handle the situation well and ended up acting like ‘Harry from the institution’ rather than ‘Harry the husband’.

“I was devastated. I knew she was in trouble. We were both in trouble. But I never thought it would happen at this point. And the fact that it got to this point made me feel angry and ashamed. I didn’t handle it very well, he admitted.

I handled it as ‘the Harry of the institution’ rather than ‘Harry the husband’, and what got the better of my feelings was my royal role. I was trained to worry more about what people would think if we didn’t go to such an event. And thinking about it now, I hate myself for it. What she needed from me was so much more than I was able to give her.

Elsewhere, Doria Ragland, Meghan Markle’s mother, discussed how concerned she was for her daughter’s well-being at the time.

“To be constantly antagonized by these vultures, picking on her mind, that she can think of not wanting to be there. It’s not easy for a mother to hear. And I can’t protect her. Harry cannot protect her,” she added.

Representatives of the royal family have yet to respond to the couple’s claims.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry stepped down as senior royals in January 2020 and eventually settled in California. The second volume of Harry & Meghan is now available to stream on Netflix.
