Netflix may well lose the rights to Wednesday

After voluntary cancellations, the SVOD platform could lose its latest phenomenon following a transfer of rights.

Since November 23, Wednesday is a real hit on Netflix. However, the platform is not immune to the possible departure of its new golden egg hen. The teen series adapted from the work of Charles Addams by Tim Burton is heating up the meters and setting records. In just one week, it had already surpassed the surprising statistics of season 4 of stranger things. The young Jenna Ortega has quickly established herself as a figurehead for the streaming service, enough to ensure the transition when the series of the Duffer brothers comes to an end.

Unsurprisingly, Wednesday’s adventures will continue in a second season. Although the official announcement has not yet been made, the producers are already looking for filming locations and screenwriters for the next burst of episodes. But now that success is guaranteed, that achievement could well benefit one of Netflix’s big competitors: a doomsday scenario for the entertainment giant.

Wednesday on Prime Video?

One March 2022, Deadline announced the merger between Amazon and MGM (Metro Goldwyn Mayer, you know, the studio with the roaring lion). With this takeover, Jeff Bezos’ firm is getting hundreds and hundreds of licenses to use in future projects. This deal at $8.5 billion is far from being a vain expense since all the franchises recovered include, you guessed it: the rights of the addams family.

If Amazon decides to play the difficult, the group could well ask to recover the broadcast of the new hit series. The broadcast of a season 2 of Wednesday under the Prime Video Originals umbrella is not impossible. Another scenario, Netflix could simply organize its own deal with Amazon to keep the distribution of its jewel.

When the MGM takeover was announced, the e-commerce and streaming giant wanted to be reassuring by explaining that not all licenses would become Prime exclusives. But faced with the obvious success of Wednesdaywhy deprive yourself of it? To be continued…
