The victim, who told his story to the site “Fork” using the pseudonym Sabina, said he had a sexual relationship for about three years with the leader of the Montreal group.

“It was an abusive relationship. Emotionally abusive, manipulative, toxic. He used his power dynamic to exploit my body at times that suited him. He met me when I was vulnerable,” Sabina said.

Sabina claimed to have met Butler in 2015, while working at a coffee shop in Montreal. She was then 22 years old, while he was 35.

One thing leading to another, the young woman – who then had a boyfriend – and the singer met again, at the invitation of the latter. The relationship evolved until a first sexual encounter took place in the fall.

“In general, it was an abusive dynamic. It was very aggressive and I felt like I just had to do what he said. I wasn’t very comfortable with some of the things he was asking me to do. Ultimately, it was dehumanizing,” said Sabina.

Pitchfork previously released testimonies from four people, three women and one non-binary person, alleging sexual misconduct last August. It was by discovering these testimonies that Sabina decided to deliver her story in turn, by supporting it with numerous copies of text messages exchanged with the singer and writings in her diary.

Win Butler apologized for his actions, while maintaining that he had never had sex without consent.

“While these relationships have all been consensual, I am truly sorry to anyone I have hurt through my behavior. Looking to the future, I continue to learn from my mistakes and work hard to become a better person, someone my son can be proud of.”
