Rex Brown confirms Vinnie Paul had a grudge against Phil Anselmo over Dimebag’s death

Gibson TV has just released the fifth episode of its show, Icons, which is a long-running series of interviews with some of the most iconic personalities in the music world. And in this new episode, it’s Rex Brown, bassist of Panterawhich is honored.

During this intimate dive into his musical journey, which was filmed in December 2020, Brown discusses many topics, including his musical influences but also his childhood and his time spent within Pantera.

Referring to the separation of Pantera and the disagreement between the singer Phil Anselmo and the Abbott brothers, he said: “The story with Phil… Yeah, things went wrong [entre eux]… We don’t talk about those things in the press, sorry.”

Dimebag was shot in December 2004 onstage in Columbus, Ohio by a disturbed schizophrenic who believed members of Pantera were stealing his ideas. At the time, Dimebag was playing with Damageplan, the band he formed with Vinnie Paul after Pantera split in 2003.

It is well known that until his death, Vinnie remained at odds with Anselmo, whom the drummer indirectly blamed for Dimebag’s death.

Brown offered his thoughts on the late Pantera drummer’s thinking: “[Vinnie] wanted nothing to do with Phil – period. He thought his brother had died because of him. I don’t agree with that. I think he was a madman who had already planned and premeditated the stunt he was going to make.

Earlier this year, Pantera announced their return, with Brown and Anselmo teaming up with guitarist Zakk Wylde (black label society, Ozzy Osbourne) and drummer Charlie Benante (Anthrax) for a world tour in tribute to the musical heritage of the legendary group of Metal.
