Saint-Lo. Cool exhibition for young people by Christian Voltz
A funny bird and a unique creature by the author of the children’s book Christian Voltz. Until February 6, 2023, in the exhibition hall of the mediatheque Saint-Lô (Manche), he set up a piece of his universe as a young author, an imaginative master and a poet of recycled objects that make up the material for his characters from the book.
It’s a simple stroke of luck to go to the exhibition where Christian Voltz staged individual characters from his children’s books. Installing The Man in the Nest, from The Man in the Bird Hat by Damois’elle, composed of pieces of iron wire and scrap metal worked with his master pliers, his pig night lamp Fingerinsenosisses Gaz’role to hang on the wall, to explain in a very educational way how it works, it’s great. We learn how he manages to create a story, his characters made of wire and found objects, with photographs, text that is constantly refined, so that he can finally publish a children’s book in his own way.
This exhibition is beautiful, full of charm. Especially since Christian Voltz explains how he got there with the help of plates, books and illustrations. And how he makes his children’s books so original, while offering children the opportunity to try them themselves. How? Creating their own characters with the help of recycled materials available to young readers of his books. Just dare to start. And then, in addition to the exhibited characters, sculptures, books, the visitor can taste some short films projected on the screen: a kind of caricatures of the characters from his books, put together by his very imaginative talent.
