At the beginning of the year, some could make good decisions. Instead, Journal du Japon invites you to take on new challenges and discover new activities. Cooking, drawing… Clear and practical books are here to accompany you!

Cooking with two beautiful books: the basics of Japanese cuisine and noodles in all forms in a 100% vegetable version

We start with The flavors of Japan from Laura Ki etc Aline Princet according to Mango editions, a book that combines essential and more personal recipes, but also encounters with several Japanese personalities or those closely associated with Japan. A beautiful large format book to discover the taste of Japan.

It begins with various details about this taste of Japan. The first explanation of Japanese cuisine: the cuisine of ancestors nourished by influences, the cuisine of centenarians, the cuisine in the rhythm of the seasons and the cuisine of the combination of taste and aesthetics. We are also talking about umami, the word that uniquely characterizes Japanese cuisine, and which is much more than the fifth taste that is often adorned. Finally, there is the question of the classic composition of dishes in Japan.

Then come basics : classic presentations of Japanese foods to have in your cupboard, with beautiful and large photos of the different ingredients, as well as a definition of each product featured. The same applies to fruits, vegetables and herbs used in Japanese cuisine. Then we move on to making sauces (with the chef’s advice on how to use them, which dishes to pair them with). A double page is devoted to seaweed, an important ingredient in Japan. You will also learn in this section how to make seasoning, furikake, tsukemono, takuan, Chinese cabbage with umeboshi. And of course cook rice, prepare dashi (with a vegetarian version), miso soup or suimono with mushrooms.

Drawing manga with a book to start gently

Manga drawing by Ta Van-Huy, Manga Editions: CoverThe Mango editions to offer a new book dedicated to manga drawing. This time, it’s a book for beginners that will allow you to start slowly, without fear of not getting there, because everything is explained simply and clearly, with concrete basics and very accessible step-by-step models. A BOOK to get you started!

From the introduction, the apprentice cartoonist is given confidence because he is encouraged not to be afraid to copy, to devote time to his passion, to persevere and be flexible, to remain open, curious.

Presentation material is simple and effective: mechanical pencil, eraser, pencil, different types of markers whose purposes will be explained on the pages. Nothing is missing, nothing is too much.

Then we start with a mechanical pencil for Sketch. Learn to scale characters, structure volumes, create movements. There are humans as well as animals or chimeras. You also learn to draw hands (anxiety of many apprentices, but here it is simple, almost easy, the different positions of the hands are put in detailed sketches that are available step by step), but also all parts of the face: proportionally distribute the lines according to the orientation of the face (profile, face , 3/4), draw hair, nose, eyes, mouth and even eyebrows. What’s also fascinating is drawing facial expressions, in a few simple strokes everything changes, it’s funny and fascinating!

Once you’ve mastered the sketches (we could spend hours with a mechanical pencil and an eraser, just to be sure), we attack completing the drawing : learn to modulate lines to give relief, draw shadows, shade, apply wefts… Each line has its own marker and learn to use the right tool in the right way.

Finally, the last part is dedicated to colorization. We learn how interesting alcohol markers are for flat surfaces of a uniform color, we also use them for shading (different shades for different effects), for decomposition (using a blender, a colorless marker), and above all we know when to do what during coloring, it’s very simple, but important! We can then complete this coloring by creating effects with pastels and colored pencils to tint the complexion. You can also use a white gel roller to create light effects. Hair coloring may seem difficult, but it is clearly explained on a separate page. And finally we finish with water markers for a little original touch.

In short, everything is in the book. You can start from scratch, you will be able to progress slowly but effectively. And once you’ve mastered all these basics, you can dive into other books for more complex stuff. But with this you will already have the pleasure of drawing and coloring beautiful manga characters! We are waiting for your creations!
